Are you having your relationship "5 a day"?

Haven TeamJuly 11, 2026

Most of us know this.

Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.

Not because one apple magically transforms your health.

But because small nutrients, repeated consistently, help your body thrive.

Nobody expects to eat one healthy meal in January and still benefit in December.

Health doesn't work like that.

And neither do relationships.

Yet this is exactly how many of us think about love.

We assume that finding the right person is enough.

That if the relationship is "meant to be," connection should somehow sustain itself.

Then, years later, we wonder where the spark went.

Perhaps we've been thinking about love all wrong.

Relationships need nutrients too.

Imagine if relationships had their own version of "5 a day."

Not because they're broken.

But because they're living systems.

Every living thing needs nourishment.

Plants.

Friendships.

Bodies.

Businesses.

Families.

Relationships are no different.

They don't slowly fade because love disappears.

They fade because, like any living system, they experience what we at Haven call Relational Entropy.

Left alone, every living system naturally becomes less organised, less connected and less vibrant.

Not because anyone did something wrong.

Simply because no energy was added.

The good news?

The opposite is also true.

Small acts of nourishment, repeated consistently, create extraordinary relationships.

The Seven Relationship Nutrients

1. Novelty

Every relationship needs fresh experiences.

Try a new café.

Learn something together.

Take a different walking route.

Your brain loves discovering new things, and it's even more powerful when those discoveries become shared memories.

2. Affection

A six-second kiss.

Holding hands.

A hug before leaving the house.

Gentle touch reminds your nervous systems that you're safe together.

Tiny moments.

Huge impact.

3. Rituals

Morning coffee.

Friday pizza.

Sunday walks.

Goodnight kisses.

Relationships aren't built by anniversaries.

They're built by ordinary moments that happen over and over again.

4. Appreciation

Don't just feel grateful.

Say it.

"I noticed."

"Thank you."

"I loved that."

Appreciation changes what both partners start paying attention to.

5. Curiosity

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is assuming they already know each other.

But people change.

Keep asking.

What's exciting you lately?

What's worrying you?

What have you changed your mind about?

Strong relationships keep updating their understanding of each other.

6. Presence

The greatest gift you can give someone is your full attention.

Phones away.

Eyes up.

Listen.

Sometimes connection doesn't need better words.

It just needs fewer distractions.

7. Growth

The healthiest couples don't just build a life together.

They continue becoming new people together.

Read.

Travel.

Dream.

Challenge each other.

Support each other's ambitions.

Growth keeps relationships alive.

What happens when relationships become undernourished?

Think about nutrition.

If you stop eating vegetables today, you won't become ill tomorrow.

The effects appear slowly.

Less energy.

Lower resilience.

Poorer health.

Relationships work the same way.

Miss one date night?

Probably fine.

Forget to express appreciation once?

No problem.

Skip one meaningful conversation?

Life happens.

But months become years.

Novelty disappears.

Curiosity fades.

Rituals quietly vanish.

Affection becomes occasional.

Presence gives way to distraction.

The relationship doesn't suddenly fail.

It slowly becomes undernourished.

Many couples mistake this for "falling out of love."

Often, it's simply a relationship that's hungry.

Love isn't a feeling. It's an ecosystem.

One of the biggest misconceptions about love is that it's something we find.

The science paints a different picture.

The couples who remain deeply connected after twenty or thirty years aren't necessarily the luckiest.

They've simply kept feeding the relationship.

Not perfectly.

Consistently.

They understand something profoundly simple.

Love is less like a lightning strike...

...and more like a garden.

You don't admire it once.

You tend to it.

A healthier relationship starts with today's nutrients

Imagine asking yourself one simple question every evening:

Which relationship nutrients did we feed today?

Did we laugh?

Did we hug?

Did we learn something together?

Did we show appreciation?

Did we really listen?

No single act transforms a relationship.

But hundreds of tiny acts do.

Just like "5 a day" changed how we think about physical health, perhaps it's time we started thinking about relationship health in the same way.

Because healthy relationships don't happen by accident.

They grow through intentional nourishment.

Every single day.
