What Compassion Teaches Us About Healthy Relationships

Haven TeamJune 6, 2026

Recently, we were speaking with two Haven members, Martha and Phil, about their experience using the app.

As often happens in these conversations, we started by discussing their relationship, the habits they had built together, and the practices they found most valuable. But then the conversation took an unexpected turn.

Martha and Phil are vegan, and they shared something quite extraordinary: many of the principles that led them to veganism were the same principles that attracted them to Haven.

Compassion. Conscious living. Intentional choices. Empathy for the wellbeing of others. A desire to reduce unnecessary harm. A commitment to growth.

The more they explained their perspective, the more we could see the connection.

Our community includes people from many different backgrounds, beliefs, and lifestyles. But their observation sparked an interesting reflection: perhaps some of the values that help people live more consciously are also the values that help relationships thrive.

Shared Values Are a Powerful Starting Point

Many of the couples in our community met because they shared important values, interests, or life goals.

Some met through mutual friends. Others through hobbies and communities. Some through dating apps designed to connect people with similar lifestyles and beliefs.

Having shared values can create a strong foundation for a relationship. It often makes it easier to understand one another, make decisions together, and build a common vision for the future.

This is one reason we're proud to partner with Veggly.

Veggly helps people connect with others who share an important aspect of their lifestyle and worldview. Time and again, we've seen how meaningful it can be when a relationship begins from a place of alignment.

But as important as shared values are, they are only the beginning.

Finding the Right Person Is Not the Finish Line

One of the biggest myths about relationships is that finding the right person is enough.

In reality, even the most compatible couples need skills, habits, and intentional effort to build a strong relationship over time.

Shared values help couples start the journey together.

Relationship skills help them continue it.

Communication, appreciation, emotional awareness, conflict resolution, curiosity, and empathy are not things most people automatically master. They are skills that can be learned and strengthened.

That's where Haven comes in.

Our mission is to help couples build the small, consistent habits that turn compatibility into connection and connection into lasting partnership.

Compassion in Action

One of the ideas Martha and Phil spoke about was compassion.

For them, veganism is fundamentally an expression of compassion: an effort to consider the impact of their choices on animals, people, and the wider world.

Healthy relationships require a similar mindset.

Research consistently shows that empathy and emotional responsiveness are among the strongest predictors of relationship satisfaction and long-term success.

Strong relationships aren't built solely through grand gestures. They are built through everyday acts of understanding, patience, kindness, and care.

The ability to pause and ask, "How might my partner be experiencing this?" can transform the quality of a relationship.

Living More Intentionally

Another parallel Martha and Phil noticed was intentionality.

Whether someone chooses a vegan lifestyle, commits to a fitness routine, or works on their relationship, meaningful change rarely happens by accident.

It comes from making conscious choices again and again.

Many of the practices within Haven are designed around this simple idea. Rather than leaving connection to chance, couples create small moments of reflection, appreciation, and conversation that help them stay connected amidst the busyness of everyday life.

Over time, these small moments compound into something much bigger.

Creating Sustainable Relationships

Perhaps the comparison we liked most was the idea of sustainability.

Veganism is often associated with creating a more sustainable future for the planet.

In a different way, Haven is focused on creating sustainable relationships.

Not relationships that are perfect.

Relationships that can adapt, recover, grow, and remain strong through life's inevitable challenges.

Relationships that continue to flourish not because they are effortless, but because they are nurtured.

A Shared Mission

The conversation with Martha and Phil reminded us that relationship health is about much more than romance.

It's about how we treat one another.

It's about compassion, awareness, respect, and intentional action.

These values belong to no single community. They are universal human values.

Whether a couple met through Veggly, through friends, at work, or by pure chance, the same principle applies:

Finding the right person is a wonderful beginning.

Building a thriving relationship together is the journey that follows.

And that's the journey Haven exists to support.
